General Tooth Extraction

If a tooth is unable to be saved by other conventional means, it may need to be extracted to preserve the health of the remaining teeth and protect your oral health.

General Tooth Extraction

Is it time to pull a tooth?

When a tooth is broken or damaged due to decay or other causes, it can sometimes be fixed with a filling, a root canal, or a crown. However, if there is too much damage for one of these fixes to work, it is time to have the damaged tooth removed. Common reasons for general tooth extraction include

  • Infection caused when tooth decay or damage enters the center of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels
  • Increased risk of infection because your immune system has been compromised (e.g., chemotherapy or organ transplants)
  • Teeth crowding when baby teeth don’t fall out in time for adult teeth to grow in
  • Extra teeth that prevent normal teeth from properly growing
  • Preparing the mouth for orthodontia
  • Tooth loosening caused by an infection of the tissue surrounding the teeth, also called periodontal disease

Before your procedure, your oral surgeon will perform a complete oral exam and evaluation. This includes taking X-rays and 3D scans of the area and discussing your treatment. This is also a great time to ask any questions that you may have. We are here to help!

Most tooth extraction procedures can be completed in a single visit to one of our offices. If you are planning on replacing the missing tooth with a dental implant, your oral surgeon may be able to place the implant post the same day as your extraction. If other procedures, such as a bone graft, are needed, we will schedule additional appointments and guide you through every step of the way.
